Welcome to Mattawa

Nestled at the junction of the Ottawa and Mattawa rivers, the Town of Mattawa takes its name from the Ojibway language, where "Mattawa" translates to the Meeting of the Waters. The intersection of these two rivers holds a crucial position, signifying an essential point for those navigating the historic waterway to explore different regions of Canada.

Numerous explorers, including Étienne Brûlé (1610), Samuel de Champlain (1615), and Pierre Radisson (1659), traversed Mattawa. As the oldest settlement in the Nipissing District, Mattawa serves as a pivotal geographic hub, boasting an intricate network of historic canoe and portage trails, alongside well-established roads and railroads.
